LBP, MBP and HBP - Meaning and application overview

Technical#1: LBP, MBP and HBP: Meaning and application overview.

In a small series of short articles, we look at technical facets of refrigeration. Part 1 is about compressor application areas. In the further course of the series, we will look at other aspects to consider when selecting replacement compressors.

Compressors are divided into 4 types according to application: LBP, MBP, HBP and AC. In this blog post we will give a brief overview of the application areas and the meaning of these terms.

LBP

LBP means "Low Back Pressure" - these compressors are used when low evaporating temperatures are required. LBP compressors are used for example in deep freezers, freezers and preservers.

MBP

The abbreviation MBP means "Medium Back Pressure" - accordingly, these compressors are used in the range of medium evaporating temperatures. Examples of applications are beverage coolers or sales counters.

HBP

Not surprisingly, "HBP" stands for "High Back Pressure" and HBP compressors are used in the field of high evaporation temperatures. You will find HBP compressors for example in dehumidifiers or construction dryers.

AC

AC stands for "Air Conditioning" - AC compressors are used in the air conditioning sector.

It is worth noting that this nomenclature is not uniformly standardized and the application limits can change depending on the compressor manufacturer. It is also very common to couple 2 applications if the compressor can be used for both applications, for example L/MBP.

The application range of a compressor should definitely be considered when selecting a replacement compressor. If, for example, an HBP compressor is replaced with an LBP compressor, functional failures will occur - since the latter was designed accordingly for completely different application areas and evaporating temperatures.

In addition to the area of application, the refrigerant is also a factor that must be taken into account when selecting a replacement compressor. Since different refrigerants have different working pressures, serious functional problems can occur if a compressor is filled with the wrong refrigerant. We will go into the background here in a later blog post.
